“Salt to the Sea Memorial”
In this activity, students commemorate the people in the novel by creating a refugee memorial to represent the characters.
Create a refugee memorial to represent four of the characters in the novel who made a lasting impact on the story. After creating the memorial, select and include a quote from the book to represent each character; add a description of the character and their contribution to the refugee effort during World War II. Use the questions below to guide your creation:
When you share your memorials with classmates, explain why you chose to represent each character in the way you did.
Teaching Suggestion: Consider using this resource to describe the various methods by which a memorial can be made.
