Bryce is furious at the botched investigation. “He’d known. Her father had known there were tests to assess what had killed Danika and had done nothing. Had deliberately stayed out of it” (475-76). She goes to his palace to confront him but is forestalled by Ruhn, who agrees to run additional Fae tests on Danika’s clothing. Bryce then goes to a bar to drink and calm down. When Hunt advises her to get past her rage, she sarcastically remarks how easily he got over the dead Shahar during their brief make-out session on the roof. Stung by her observation, Hunt stalks out of the bar, leaving Bryce to brood.
Bryce realizes that her comment was unfair. As a gesture of apology, she returns later to the apartment bearing sacks of groceries. She cooks Hunt a late supper. During the meal, they talk about Danika’s true nature. Even though nobody knew it, she was always trying to do the right thing, and Bryce tried to help her. Hunt admits that if he had to do it all over again, he would still fight in the rebellion against the archangels. Both of them fight for what’s right, even if it proves to be the losing side.
