Harry and Hermione are devastated after Ron’s departure, and Harry hears Hermione crying at night. He begins to feel hopeless like he is on a “meandering, pointless journey” (313) and he let his friends down. He expects Hermione to leave him as well, but she stays. Phineas Nigellus continues to visit them and give occasional updates about what is happening at Hogwarts. One night, Hermione is looking over her copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bard and notices “the same symbol Luna’s dad was wearing round his neck” (316) written in the book. Harry remembers what Krum said about the symbol being Grindelwald’s mark. They decide to go to Godric’s Hollow in hopes of talking to Bathilda, who may know the whereabouts of Gryffindor’s sword. They disguise themselves as Muggles on Christmas Eve and enter the graveyard where Harry’s parents are buried. They discover the graves of Dumbledore’s mother and sister, along with a strange grave with “a triangular mark beneath the nearly illegible name” (327) that looks like the same symbol in Hermione’s book. Finally, they find the graves of Lily and James Potter, and Harry is overwhelmed with grief. He cries at the thought of “Lily and James [.
