Amarantha lusts after Tamlin, whose family was allied with Hybern in the ancient war against humans. Tamlin sent Lucien to negotiate with Amarantha, but Amarantha took Lucien’s eye. She held a masquerade in apology, promising peace if Tamlin agreed to be her lover. Tamlin refused, declaring he would sooner take a human lover and that even Clythia “preferred a human’s company to [Amarantha’s]” (282).
